Barbara Schulman

Schulman’s brightly colored sculptural objects made primarily of heavy felt and embellishment bring to mind female forms. They evoke thoughts of women mending, stitching, quilting, darning, and embroidering. Exploring the surface of her work for familiar phrases or symbols is like holding a mirror to reflect our popular culture. “I stitch lines evocative of weaving and fabric repeats or embellish with personal emblems identified with contemporary culture, such as credit card fragments, which relate to traditional beadwork.”
