JoAnne Russo

JoAnne’s baskets begin with raw wood collected from the forest. She processes her own materials to create baskets that are at once both traditional and very contemporary. “My baskets explore visual and emotional contrasts that are best expressed by the dichotomy: touch, but don’t touch.” The forms are breathtaking classical shapes. Many are double and triple-layered weaves exhibiting complicated patterns and textures. The soft serenity in form is frequently contrasted with the embellishment of porcupine quills or cactus needles.
